Preliminary analyses
A sound basis for decision-making
Strategic pre-design analyses provide the foundation for decisions on the alignment, location and integration of bridges, tunnels and infrastructure. Dissing+Weitling delivers pre-design analyses and consultancy services for bridge and infrastructure projects in Denmark and internationally.
We analyse movement patterns, alignments, urban life, existing structures and topography to ensure that new connections strengthen the relationship between people, cities and landscapes.
Our pre-design analyses include:
● Alignment and layout studies
● Mobility and traffic studies
● Landscape and context analyses
● Scenario and concept visualisations
● Navigation clearance and bridge landing analyses
Working closely with engineers and specialist consultants, we assess the relationships between structural design, cost, sustainability, operations and maintenance, and financing. Using traffic modelling, landscape analysis and 3D visualisations, we help build a robust basis for political decision-making and the subsequent design process.
The Bicycle Snake in Copenhagen demonstrates how a strategic pre-design analysis can evolve into a project with significant urban value. The bridge's location, alignment and design have transformed a previously fragmented area, creating new connections and activating the harbourfront with increased urban life.
At a very different scale, we have carried out complex pre-design analyses for major fjord crossings in Norway, including the Alsten Fjord Crossing. Here, we analysed the landscape, water depths, maritime traffic and bridge landings, while developing alternative bridge concepts.
Despite their very different scales, both projects demonstrate how early-stage studies help create solutions that are resilient, firmly rooted in their context and deliver lasting value.
